Doctor Strange 2 Writer Recounts How Sam Raimi Made Up Black Bolt’s ‘Horrible’ Death

Black Bolt, King of the Inhumans, has such a powerful voice that, as John Krasinski’s Mr. Fantastic said. Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, he can “rip you to pieces with a single whisper of his mouth”. Sadly, that turned out to be his undoing in the sequel, as Black Bolt’s Earth-838 version of Anson Mount met a gruesome death when Elizabeth Olsen’s Earth-616 version of Wanda Maximoff, while possessing his counterpart 838, used his chaos magic to suppress the Inhuman’s powerful mouth, causing him to scream in terror and crush his own skull. As it turns out, Multiverse of Madness director Sam Raimi was the mastermind behind Black Bolt’s death, and writer Michael Waldron explained how the filmmaker imagined this “horrific” scene.

Doctor Strange 2 was Anson Mount’s second outing as Black Bolt, having previously starred as the character from a different Earth in the short-lived Inhumans TV series. While Black Bolt made it out of this story alive, it was decided that Black Bolt of Earth-838 would be the first to fall when Scarlet Witch attacked Illuminati headquarters, though Michael Waldron struggled to figure out what should to arrive. Then Sam Raimi stepped in for backup, as Waldron explained to Empire (Going through RBC):

I was at a point in the script where I was like, “Damn, I don’t know what to do.” We wanted the first death to be really awful: “Listen, don’t fuck with Wanda. We were sitting on Zoom discussing how we kill Black Bolt, and someone said his power was shooting ultra-powerful energy from his mouth. And I swear to God, without missing a beat, Sam says, ‘What mouth?’ And Sam just painted the scene for us, ‘…and then you just cut it, Wanda just ripped his mouth open, and he screams, and his head explodes.’ That’s horror master Sam Raimi for you.

Although Michael Waldron has no problem finding ways to fit Mr. Fantastic into Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, he had a creative block to figure out how to remove Black Bolt from the board. Yet with two simple words after hearing about the character’s power, Sam Raimi came up with a solution that was tragically ironic and suited to the director’s horror sensibilities. Sure, Scarlet Witch had plenty of other ways to kill Black Bolt, but going that route gave us one of the most memorable deaths in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, with Mr. Fantastic being spaghetti shortly after also counting. in this direction. two weeks later Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness opened in theaters, Anson Mount broke his silence by appearing in the Marvel movie, saying it was “an honor and a joy to finally work” with Sam Raimi. Although Earth-838’s Black Bolt is no more, thanks to the Multiverse there are many other variations of the character we could potentially see down the line, and the mere inclusion of Black Bolt in Multiverse of Madness could indicate that Marvel Studios is finally ready to explore the Inhumans, as this group’s TV show was produced by the defunct Marvel Television. That said, with Mount in mind Star Trek: Strange New Worlds as Captain Christopher Pike, it might be difficult for him to play another Black Bolt in a larger capacity than how he was used in the strange doctor after.

Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness can stream now with a Disney+ subscription, and while the sequel’s mid-credits scene laid the groundwork for doctor strange 3, Marvel Studios has not officially announced the trio.
