Robert Rodat, the screenwriter of the de Save Private Ryan, is currently developing a new film called Semper Fi, which tells the true story of Navy Major Thomas Schueman and his extraordinary Afghan performer Zainulla Zaki.

It is explained that the story takes place during the fierce fighting in the Afghan province of Helmand, when Schueman and Zaki “formed an indestructible brotherhood that transcended the differences of their cultures and ethnicities. After Schueman returned to the United States, he tried, unsuccessfully, to help Zaki and his family leave Afghanistan. This summer, as the United States withdrew from Afghanistan, Zaki and his family were the targets of execution by the Taliban for his involvement in US forces. Schueman’s dedication to his comrade and his struggle to save him, his wife and four children led to a heart-wrenching escape and daring rescue at Kabul airport.

Rodat writes the screenplay, which is funded by Michael and Carole Marques, who will serve as executive producers. Rodat’s other writing credits include Patriot, fly home, The Command alias Kursk, The catcher was a spy, Great Tale, Summer comrades, the ripper, and 36 hours to die.
